With the origin of the
Villa Borghese (middle-class villa), a modest piece of ground, was the
property of the family of Borghese since 1580. But at the beginning of
the 17è century, the Cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese,
preferred nephew of Paolo V, started a series of land acquisitions
bordering with the intention to create a "villa of delights", symbol of
the social status of the family.
The first construction
of the Villa, entrusted to the two architects Flaminio Ponzio and
Giovanni Vasanzio and maintained until the end of the 18è
century, envisaged, while following the traditional tradition, an urban
share and a rustic share, of which the unit is divided into three
"fences", delimited with access doors. In the first fence, most
representative, were placed, in addition to the Noble Casino, wanted of
the Cardinal to receive his copier collection of art, many statues and
fountains and a "raised garden". In spite of some rehandlings, the
geometrical organization of this fence remains the same one. Current
Parc of Daini corresponds to the second fence, a garden reserved to the
prince. At the border between the first and the second fence one found
the Garden Secret, with the maisonnettes of the Birdcage and the
Meridian one.
The third fence was the
most released vastest part and, and thus that which in time underwent
the most changes. Starting from the end of the 18è century, by
the wish of Marc-Antoine Borghese, of the embellishment and alterations
were undertaken, entrusted to the architects Antonio and Mario
Asprucci, who related to the Noble Casino, the minor buildings and the
park. The most visible intervention was the realization of the Garden
of the lake, a garden with English, with the introduction of exotic
spicies and of the construction of a small temple of neo-classic style.
In the first decades of the 19è the villa was increased with
fastening with the Giustiniani Villa towards Porte of the People and
the Villas of Pamphili and Manfroni towards the Pinciana Door.
Work continued with the
intervention of Luigi Canine which left in the Villa a new organization
and many small works of eclectic inspiration and neo-classics. A new
phase followed by acquisition by the State (1901) then by the city,
which test to transform the villa into a kind of allotment and started
even a long series of rehandlings with an aim of adapting it to the new
public employment.
End of the war to today,
many were the interventions of restoration and recovery of the
organization and decorations of the park of origin. The will to promote
a policy which combines supervision and culture, allows the opening of
a new phase for the Borghese Villa, expensive with the Romans and the
tourists, reprocesses famous artists, writers, and inspirer of the
musicians.
